"Highly atmospheric and exploratory alto and soprano saxophones, guitar/electronics, and percussion. Seven contrasting pieces move in and out of various grooves and moods; highly pantonal, and polyrhythmic. The fantastic, extended title track is replete with rhythmic invention; a masterful performance by the trio. All of the tracks flow together orchestrally; this group really knows how to stretch out. The closest historical parallel might be music by the late Steve Lacy, the soprano saxophonist, if that description works. Five stars!" - David James, KFJC 89.7FM, USA

„The second of two releases of this trio recorded live in Krakow in 2016 finds Chicago reedist Vandermark, German drummer Kugel and Ukranian bassist Tokar blowing holes in walls. There are occasional respites, say when Tokar takes one his fascinating, focused solos. But generally this is tough stuff. Vandermark is a master of taking a phrase and working it repeatedly, wringing out the last drops as he modulates his ideas to the boiling point. His clarinet playing brings to mind what Artie Shaw might have done had he lived in the free-jazz era. Kugel is one of the great contemporary European drummers, and plays all over the kit with a sharp hard pulse. Ultimately I found the 1st of these two releases, “Escalator,” to be more appealing, but both showcase the vitality of Vandermark’s Eastern European trio. Not, however, daytime mix music.“ - Carl Pearson, Jazz Director, WFHB Bloomington, IN, USA

For-Tune Records album.link

„This wonderful album is an exquisite example of the trio at work, performing Improvised Music which sonically sounds like a Symphony Orchestra and musically keeps the listener on his toes at all times. Ganelin uses piano and synthesizers to create the sound layers while Vysniauskas improvises melodically on top and Kugel charges the music with incredible rhythmic tension. Together they sound like a three-headed Apollo uttering Godly sounds to charm the humans.
It is almost impossible to think of this music as a collective improvisation, as it sounds more "composed" than most composed contemporary Classical music, thanks to Ganelin´s extraordinary intrinsic sense of melody and the great talent of Vysniauskas to weave the musical threads into a spectacular colorful canvas. Kugel complements the trio perfectly with his respectful and highly attentive attitude, filling the missing pieces which require rhythmic elements of simply adding supplementary ornamentation.
Overall this is a brilliant album from start to finish, almost a "book" example of Improvised Music and its true vocation, and should serve as an example and a beacon to all other Improvising Musicians. Of the numerous Free Jazz and Improvised Music albums released on the For Tune label, this is definitely one of the absolute best ones so far. An essential listening experience!“ - Adam Baruch

Absolutely unexpected revelation! Quoting liner note: This unique trio utilizes extended vocal and instrumental technique, archaic sound objects, and ritual percussion within free metric structures. Everything is here essentially free improvised, although there are themes and melodies. One can, of course, seek comparisons with Lauren Newton, Iva Bittova, or Sainkho Namtchylak, Agata Zubel Zubel, but for me Andre is completely different. In this sense it is a true discovery of avantgarde vocal. But, one has to state clearly that the whole trio is a phenomenon not from this world. From the opening Symphonic Fields till the closing Varpai there is a constant ow of energy, of innovative ideas and creativity, of collective feelings, and of changing moods and expression. Evidently, this is one of the most interesting vocal recordings of this decade! - Maciej Lewenstein

„The first release from the brand new Berlin based label Nemu, owned and operated by Maurer and Kugel, represents an incredibly auspicious beginning. Mars is a beautifully unclassifiable record that blends contemporary classical with free improvisation to such an extent that it`s not always easy to tell which parts are scored and which are not. But intricacy and interplay take the forefront throughout creating a new kind of modern chamber music. Musicianship is exemplary with each player on the same page as the others at all times making this music and the album as a whole firmly gel. Highly recommended that you all try to find this one.“ - Justin Glick, Jazz Music Director, WNUR 89.3 FM, Chicago, 2006
